Puoro is a film that navigates the two worlds of ancient and new. In this short documentary, Jerome Kavanagh invites us into his world. We witness how Taonga Puoro is used in many different lights from being a Rongoa tool for healing one’s body during a time of pain to a ceremonial collaboration with other global indigenous practitioners. Throughout this story, we will share rare insights into a young urban Māori artist, living and practicing traditional cultural ways in a contemporary world. This kaupapa has strong ties to cultural sustainability, where ancestral practices are passed down from one generation to the next, to ensure that cultural traditions are preserved and maintained. Jerome shares a variety of insights into the world of Taonga Puoro as he passes his matauranga onto the next generation. Puoro asks the audience to reflect on how this ancient indigenous practice is a powerful contribution to the global movement and survival of indigenous knowledge practices. Being a wahine Māori filmmaker my focus for this kaupapa was to celebrate how Puoro has helped heal and navigate the path for Jerome, as well as for us to be inspired by learning about how the Māori world offers a pathway for us to understand and see the world through a Māori world view. Puoro is a rare insight into the world of one Māori artist as he takes us on a sound journey of tupuna, oro atua, and taonga puoro. Puoro is one of the Someday Stories series of short films by young New Zealand film-makers. Someday Stories is produced by Connected Media with support from NZ On Air, the New Zealand Film Commission and The Body Shop New Zealand in association with The Wireless, Māori Television and Thecoconet.tv.
